You are looking at a classic 404 Unimog ex-German military radio truck. It’s powered by a Mercedes 2.2L M180 overhead cam gasoline engine with a 6-speed forward/2-speed reverse manual transmission that sends power to fully lockable front & rear portal axles on a coil spring suspension. This rig was “mechanically restored”…meaning that the engine, clutch, fuel system, brakes, steering components, dash gauges & switches, charging system, running gear, etc. were all rebuilt a couple of years ago. During this…it was upgraded to hydro-vac boosted power brakes, and a 12,000 lbs. electric winch up front. Plus…being a Signal Van…it’s intended to haul gen-set trailers. So, it came factory equipped with an engine driven air compressor, trailer brake controls, rear glad-hands, and air quick disconnects both front & rear for filling-up tires and powering air tools. It’s still rocking it’s original 24V system with a 100 amp generator and an updated electronic ignition system. The cab top is new, and the upper door view windows were recently replaced. The cab also has the military ROPS & shoulder strap set-up installed. As far as body condition…there is some slight surface rust (see pics) but zero rot-threw anywhere. The radio box floor wood is decent and its interior has been stripped out and ready for adaptation. The box doors lock and both the side and rear openings have slide-out steps for ease of entry. The radio box also has an externally accessed compartment for 2 additional batteries and both roof hatches are removable.
This Mog is in good condition, and runs & handles great. It’s been driven about 400 miles since rebuild, is currently licensed & registered, and comes with a clear Washington title. It’s not fast though…about 50 mph max…but it will take you practically anywhere! Since I’ve received it back to list for sale…I have noticed a couple things: 1) It now puffs some smoke just upon start-up after sitting for while…indication of leaky intake valve guide stem seals is my guess…but it clears up right away. (the head was done by another shop, and they may have not used OEM seals…?) 2) The windshield wiper blade rubbers are shot and need replaced. 3) The original 24V horn has quit working. (the air horn works though…boy does it ever!) Other than these minor issues…this rig is in great operational shape and ready to ride. The gent I’m listing it for had intended to make this his bug-out rig…but now he’s decided to go another way. Here’s your chance to own a piece of brilliant German engineering…you need this!
This military vehicle is also for sale locally…so this auction could end early if it sells here first. While I’m sure you have some very tempting stuff…the guy is after cash this time…so please no trade offers. (well…unless…you have something so cool that I might be in interested in myself…LOL) There is no reserve…the listed price is what we’re asking…but you are welcome to make an offer. I can also get you some transport quotes, and provide storage here at my shop until pick-up can be arranged if needed. Please feel free to ask any question or request additional pics.
Good luck…and thanks for looking! Army Dave
