DescriptionActual A-2 flight jacket from the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII. The manufacturer is Poughkeepsie. The most attractive feature of this jacket is the beautiful painting of a large pinup girl on the back. The words “Queen Of Tarts” are written on the back of the jacket, which may be a reference to the famous Alice in Wonderland by the English author Lewis Carroll, who wrote “The Queen of Hearts, she made thee a queen. The Queen of Hearts, she made some tarts” in the famous “Alice in Wonderland” by the English author Lewis Carroll, which may have been the inspiration for the name. In any case, the composition and the beauty of the woman depicted in the painting suggest that it was painted by someone of professional skill. Unfortunately, the unit to which she belonged is unknown, but I think it was probably painted in the European theater. The paintwork is very impressive. There are no signs of patches or other items that have been removed. I think the leather is horsehide. The color is a slightly reddish seal brown. The leather has some damage around the neck (see the 8th photo), a small cut along the stitching around the elbow of the left sleeve (see the last photo), and some surface defects, but overall it is still supple and not bad for an actual A-2 of the time. I think it is in good condition. The lining has some tears around the neck and under the right armpit. Half of the tag has been removed. The knitwear is original and has some damage, but is in good condition. The knits on the sleeves are quite broken, although it is unclear if they are original or were replaced at the time (= if you want to repair them, don’t replace them, keep the current ones alive and sew them together, they will look much better). The zipper is a TALON that was replaced in later years (i.e., about the 50s) and works fine. The size is US40 at that time, shoulder width is 44cm, body width (=underarm to armpit): approx. 50cm, sleeve length: (shoulder length) approx. 50cm, and sleeve length: (sleeve length) approx. 50cm. Sleeve length: (from shoulder) approx. 62 cm & (from armpit) approx. 48 cm. Length (= from the bottom of the back collar to the knit part) is about 61cm.
